We hold our High School Sailing Regattas on the above mentioned Sunday afternoons and all high schools are invited to participate.  The class of boat is the Laser and is open to any rig size of choice.  Due to our limited number of boats our Lasers are reserved for our Racing Clinic Students and High School Sailing Club Members.  Unfortunately all others must provide their own boat.

This year if there are enough beginner sailors interested in our racing clinic we are going to have a Varsity team for the returning and more advanced sailors and a Jr. Varsity for the beginners. The Varsity team will meet on Tuesdays and the Jr. Varsity will meet on Thursdays. During the season we will hold scrimmage regattas between the Varsity and J.V. teams to see if any J.V. sailor can move up to Varsity.

Our high school sailing program isn't just about racing.  We offer use of our Lasers to all high school aged students with membership in our High School Sailing Club.  To join the club the student must show proof of sailing proficiency in the Laser or have completed our Beginner High School Training Course.   A one-time membership fee of $40.00/semester will help offset maintenance and insurance costs and  allow the student member the following benefits:

Use of Laser sailboat free of charge.

Eligibility in Brevard Sailing League scrimmages.

High school teams are the way students who might otherwise never find a way to sail can get afloat and begin finding the lifelong pleasure that sailing can offer. Better still, high school sailing is one of the few school sporting activities in which boys and girls can compete with each other on equal terms. Sailing is a sport to enjoy throughout their life regardless of physical stature, age, or gender. It is a sport that you can participate in for recreation or competition, well past retirement age.

Beginner High School Training Course, this 12 hour course is designed for the high school student with no sailing experience whatsoever.  It follows the U.S. Sailing Certified Course guidlines but more streamlined with a touch competition added.  Min. class size: 5, Max: 10, fee: $95 + $15 for text book. (Ages 14-18 only).

High School Sailing Program Update

Our racing clinic will run ten sessions with the Varsity students meeting once per week on Tuesdays and the Jr. Varsity on Thursdays.  This clinic is designed to introduce the sport of competitive sailing at the high school level.  The students start in the Hobie Wave to introduce them to sailing. They will then be moved to the Laser which will be the primary training boat used for single hand sailing in the program.  The double hand sailing will be introduced in the 420 class sailboat.  These class boats are the primary boats used by the Interscholastic Sailing Association (ISSA) in their regional and national regattas.  The first semester will include lectures addressing; starts, upwind sailing, downwind sailing, tactics, mark roundings, rules and protests, boat speed, boat handling, light air and heavy air sailing.  These are combined with on-the-water drills to further expand their racing experience.

Included in the clinic will be Sunday regattas for the students to practice their newly learned skills in the actual race setting.  These regattas are considered The Brevard Sailing League scrimmages and are not restricted to just the clinic participants.  Any Brevard high school student with access to a Laser sailboat is encouraged to join in the regattas as well as any other Laser Sailors.

We continue to search for a faculty member from any of the Brevard high schools to sponsor a sailing club within their school.  The sponsor's responsibilities depend solely on their school's policy.  Performance Sail and Sport's attendance requirements of the sponsors are strictly voluntary.  Without the help of these sponsors, the hopes of a sailing club at your school is minimal.  If there are any potential sponsors with questions on the program please feel free to call or email us.

Looking For Someone to Sail With?

Think of that small boat sailing club. Weekends are a good time to come out and sail with other small boat owners here at Performance Sail. We have almost two dozen boats stored here by active sailors.  Weekends can be a flurry of activity here, sometimes barbecues and "bull" sessions break-out at spur of the moment. Our Sunday Wave Racing program started with a bang. You can join the fun if you like to race.  See our Announcements page for up to date events and results.
